[pull quote] A
n earthquake devastates an entire city. A raging flood leaves thousands homeless. People are hurt, traumatized and often desperate.

Medical emergency units cope with the physical trauma. Police are entrusted with public safety while fire fighters save the city from further destruction.

But who cares for the broken lives such disasters leave in their wake? That is where the Volunteer Minister steps in.

A Volunteer Minister is a person who helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by providing fundamental counseling and applying SCIENTOLOGY principles to any situation encountered.

SCIENTOLOGY is essentially a user-friendly religion and the accent is definitely on application. SCIENTOLOGY provides the individual with tools he can use to DO something about life. And, because it is offered as something to DO rather than expounded as something to believe, SCIENTOLOGY is practical technology used by people of any faith.

Thus, when riots broke out in Los Angeles, religious leaders across the city sought help from SCIENTOLOGY Volunteer Ministers to bring order back into the community and give spiritual assistance to those in need.

When an earthquake devastated Kobe in Japan, Volunteer Ministers were on hand helping the distraught and homeless victims of the disaster, while also training others to assist. Over 10,000 volunteer hours were donated to help the people of this ravaged city.

When the bomb of a madman rocked the city of Oklahoma, killing children in a government facility, a team of Volunteer Ministers arrived on the scene to work with the Red Cross and local ministries and help those who had lost loved ones in the blast and bring order to the chaotic environment.

News of an earthquake which destroyed two-thirds of the island of Sakhalin in Russia resulted in immediate response – a team of Russian Volunteer Ministers flew directly into the island to provide life-saving assistance to its people.

And in Indonesia, a single Volunteer Minister arrived on the scene of an earthquake, quickly trained up volunteers to help the many homeless victims and left 300 people behind her with the tools to bring relief to tens of thousands.

The help, of course, is always free. Nothing is asked for in return.

For Volunteer Ministers are people who help their fellow man on a volunteer basis by restoring purpose, truth and spiritual values to the lives of others.

Their help is not only given during times of national crisis. They are equally active in their own communities, helping someone with a drug problem or a failing marriage, tutoring someone who has trouble with their school studies, assisting an elderly person to recover from a traumatic operation, helping the builder who just lost the use of his arm in an accident and guiding people through any number of the day-to-day stresses of life.

The Volunteer Minister is there, on the scene, DOING something about it.

A Volunteer Minister does not shut his eyes to the pain, evil and injustice in the world. Rather, he is trained to handle such misery and help others achieve the relief that comes from the application of Scientology to everyday life.

And where can you find this simple but powerful practical technology?

It’s contained in The Scientology Handbook based on the works of L. Ron Hubbard. Published also as a series of booklets, hundreds of thousands have used the “how-to” principles in The Scientology Handbook and booklets to improve their lives and the lives of others.

No matter what the problem, the Volunteer Minister of the Church of Scientology will be there to help. Frequently joining hands with ministers of other churches, Volunteer Ministers share their knowledge and help to improve conditions in the communities of those ministers.

In fact, anyone from any church can train to become a Volunteer Minister. Go to the nearest SCIENTOLOGY church or mission and do a course based on The Scientology Handbook. Or, if this is not practical, do an extension course by mail to help become skilled in applying SCIENTOLOGY procedures.

As more and more people see the value of bringing true help to another, the Volunteer Minister program spreads further throughout the society. By freely offering his assistance to those who need it, the effective contributions of the Volunteer Minister are making the world a better place.
